The monographs describe substances used in medicine and pharmacy worldwide. A substance entry consists of a main entry to which several follow-up entries can be assigned, and searches can be run on any designation of the main and follow-up monographs, on preferred designations and synonyms alike, as well as on reference numbers and substance classification.

Chemical compounds and classifying entries

For chemical compounds the WHO international nonproprietary name (INN) is used as the preferred designation. Where no INN exists, the European Pharmacopoeia or German pharmacopoeia name is used. Classifying entries group substances by chemical, pharmacological, cosmetic-technological or pesticide criteria, and add markers such as the PRISCUS list of potentially inappropriate medication for older people, substances of concern in compounding, and occupationally relevant substances.

Substances of biotic origin

For source plants the scientific plant name is chosen as the preferred designation, while plant parts and preparations carry standardised German names. Entries for plant, animal or microbial substances also record occurrence, quality requirements from pharmacopoeias, and qualitative and quantitative constituents with their sources.

Sources and reference works

The list draws on the recognised pharmacopoeias and reference works, including the European Pharmacopoeia (Ph. Eur.), the German Pharmacopoeia (DAB), the British and United States Pharmacopoeias, the WHO INN lists, the Merck Index and Martindale.
