The diagnoses section covers patient characteristics that can limit or exclude the use of a specific finished medicinal product. Alongside chronic diseases, it captures special living conditions such as pregnancy and lactation, defined age ranges such as women and men of childbearing age, and behaviours such as smoking, competitive sport, or contact lens wearing.
The allergies section records hypersensitivities relevant to finished medicinal products. It considers both allergic (immunological) and pseudo-allergic reactions and tests active substances, excipients, medicinal plants, and their preparations. It also distinguishes between a true allergy and a cross-reaction.
The age section warns about age-related risks of a finished medicinal product. Based on the date of birth, it checks whether the product is suitable at the patient's current age and differentiates between "No application" and "Application limitation". Where the strength or dosage form does not fit the patient's age, it adds an "Atypical medication" note.
The gender section flags a warning when the gender-specific indication areas of a finished medicinal product do not match the documented patient gender.

CAVE delivers the base data for an automated, patient-specific drug risk assessment at the point of dispensing. Its goal is to support professionals during counselling and to contribute to comprehensive quality assurance when medicines are handed out. For this purpose, the patient is considered together with personal characteristics such as age, gender, medical history, and medication history.
CAVE integrates into the pharmacy system's dispensing function. Where coded data are available, it automatically reviews patient characteristics for potential drug risks and shows the relevant information on screen.
For a given finished medicinal product, all potential risks are listed clearly, so that possible application risks can be raised during counselling even without patient data on file.
In combination with the ABDA-Database, CAVE supports the selection of suitable medicines for patients with risk factors, a further step toward medication safety.
